RIDERS UNDERGROUND
In my second year of university, I was tasked with making a game of my choice, for this game I created a game called Riders Underground. Riders Underground is an arcade platformer runner style game that will challenge the player via the level design and the mechanics within a level. The player will run the course of three levels each consisting of unique courses and routes that the player can finish the level with whilst having to collect different items along the way that will cause different effects to happen to the player.
The player will have to collect a certain number of fuses to turn the power on in the next level and progress through the game. If the player does not manage to get enough fuses to progress, they will be sent back to the start of the level and will re-run the course until either the two-minute timer runs out or they can collect enough items in order to progress. I took inspiration from the way subway surfers will make the player move at a constant rate having pickups that will affect the player in different ways. However, instead of making the level procedurally generate I chose to take influence from games such as Tony Hawks Pro Skater this way having a level-based system that the player must complete certain objectives within to unlock the next level. This way I was also able to manually place the tiles and obstacles in the level which meant I was more able to create a tailored level for each of the different kind of collectable items. Creating a more compact and fast paced level when the player has a helmet or creating obstacles that will if maneuverer correctly will reward the player with more items progressing them towards the completion of a level.
